Air hostess is a person assigned with the duty of welcoming the air passengers with a greeting smile. She is a person who instructs co-ordinates, directs people and makes them feel comfortable inside the aircraft. It is a very promising career accompanied with the excitement of flying, traveling and a very attractive pay package. They provide first aid should the situation arise. They serve meals to passengers and crew and after the meal clear the dishes and check again that all passengers have been served all the items. Their duties and responsibilities start much before the arrival of the passengers by checking that blankets, pillows, magazines, newspapers, etc are in good order in their proper places. Strong conviction, commitment, hard work, ready to work on odd hours is qualities necessary for this profession. Liberalisation of air policies have increased the private operation of air services and this has created immense job opportunities in this field. |

Eligibility for air-hostess training programme is either 10+2 or a graduate degree with a diploma/degree in Hotel Management or Tourism management. Age limit is below 25 yrs and candidate must hold appropriate passport and should be around 157.5 centimeters in height and weight must be in proportion to height. Further, one must be unmarried, with normal eyesight of 6/6 uncorrected vision in each eye. Fluency in English and knowledge of an international language is an added advantage. Admission is made through different stages of test. After initial screening, the candidate has to qualify written test and subsequent group discussions and interviews. There are numerous short term as well as long term courses available. While short term courses include training of around 3-6 months the long term courses are of a duration of more than a year.

An air hostess can further be promoted as Senior Flight Attendant and then Head Attendant. One can get employed in private owned domestic and international airlines namely Sahara,emirates airlines, Singapore airlines, Jet Airways etc or in government air services . After working as an air-hostess for several years one can work as Ground Hostess, Check Hostess, training of airhostess or work in the management level. The span of their flying career as symbols of hospitality may tend to be contractual, but experienced cabin crew are successfully absorbed in alternative careers in travel and tourism, hotels and in mass media, to name a few prominent options. In the beginning, depending on the airlines you are getting into, your salary and other allowance may add up to $500 to $1100 or more per month. Reputed international airliners pay an average of nearly 50000$ annually with senior Air-Hostesses getting above 80000$ annually apart from lucrative perks and packages.
