Hair dressing industry has experienced a boom as today people have become more sophisticated and fashion conscious. Everybody wants to look good and feel good. Cut and style of your hair can transform your look and personality from grossly ugly to a glamorous look. Designing a Cut needs care, precision, artistic appreciation, technique combination and control. A hairstylist is a person who can keep track of the latest fashion and understands all angles, circles and lines he/she might have to use while haircutting, in order to fit his/hers clients body and face shapes. Hair Styling is related to cosmetology. Hair stylist specializes in the styling of hair,including cutting, chemical perms (relaxers, curls, waves) and color treatments.

Hair stylists can also apply hair extensions and weaves.A flair for hair styling coupled with an intrinsic zeal to study hair styling is a vital prerequisite. Hair styling courses can be pursued after 12th but certain institutes do offer courses for 10th pass students also. Some of the institutes in India also offer certificate courses on hair styling. One can also come across hair styling courses offered by various institutions and beauty parlors. A course on Hair Styling trains an individual in the following areas: Shampoo and scalp treatment, Braiding, curling, finger waving & sectioning of hair, Knowledge about Trichology and pH scale, Roller setting of hair, Hair cutting techniques using clippers, razors, shears etc, Application of wigs and hair extensors, Hair coloring and perming , Hair waving and straightening. Besides this one also needs to be aware of the various hair products available in the market, and should be knowledgeable about their use. He should have an understanding of what kind of product would suit a particular client's hair. In some countries, becoming a professional hairstylist requires a degree from a recognized institute and a license to practice. There are several institutes the world over that offer courses in hairstyling, hair colouring, treatments, etc.

The mushrooming of beauty parlors in every nook and corner has created ample job opportunities for hair stylists. There are several avenues open to a hairstylist like opening one's own salon, working with another established stylist, or entering the world of celebrity hairstyling. One can work either freelance or full-time, depending on one's preferences. Some hairstylists do offer services to clients at their doorstep. One can find employment with television channels, movie and theatre artists, fashion designers, advertising agencies, fashion magazines, or with beauty salons. One can also choose to become teacher to impart their knowledge to new entrants in the field, after gaining sufficient experience in the industry.
