Decision Making

Decision making is the process of selecting best possible alternative from among several choices. It can also be regarded as a problem solving activity.

Good decision making is an essential skill for career success and effective leadership. Taking correct decisions at a proper time and place lays the foundation of strong leadership qualities. Certain decisions are very easy to take. This includes a number of small decisions that we take in our day to day life. But for more complex, uncertain and difficult decisions we need to follow certain rules for decision making. A logical and systematic decision-making process helps you address the critical elements that result in a good decision.

This includes first defining our goals and strategy to achieve them. Then you must consult and discuss the problem with seniors or people who have done some related work and have experience in that field. Analyse the problem from all perspectives and generate proper alternatives. The more good options you consider, the more comprehensive your final decision will be. Then rate all the alternatives and list down their merits and demerits. Ask questions and analyse whether each step of your decision making process is going in the right direction. You can also group and organise similar ideas into one comprehensive alternative. Then choose the best possible alternative and then put it to test whether it is feasible in all conditions or not.

These strategies are general and can be applied in any field of interest whether you want to make any corporate decision or decision regarding one’s own career. It is quite simple i.e. if you consider choosing your career then you first see all the possible alternatives available and then test it according to your abilities and financial conditions whether you will be able to complete the course in future. Remember that very few decisions in life are irrevocable. Thus while taking any important decision in life analyse effectively and then implement confidently.
